This kind of activity - flushing out low-rent tenants and replacing them with wealthier new renters - has been a staple of strong real estate markets for years. What was different over the past few years was how widespread this Dickensian business model had become, largely fueled by Wall Street money seeking high rates of return. Another difference was how much the general investing public - through university endowments and pension funds - became party to such morally dubious schemes. Consider it another footnote to the Gilded Age we just passed through. (See pictures of Americans in their homes...

...Star Trek, Angels & Demons, Terminator Salvation and Night at the Museum; and those are just the major sequels, prequels and remakes.) The last weekend in April is a kind of movie doggie day care, where Hollywood stashes its unwanted mutts until they can be unleashed on DVD. Given the low-rent release date of Obsessed, and Sony Screen Gems' refusal to screen it for critics, industry analysts predicted an opening weekend of $15-17 million. The most vehement of the Republican faithful live in an alternative universe, fermented by decades of Rush Limbaugh's brilliantly meretricious baloney and Sean Hannity's low-rent bullying. As McCain's audiences went out of control, Hannity stoked the rage with a "documentary" about Obama that featured, without qualification, a poisonously flaky anti-Semite who claimed to know Obama was a Muslim. But McCain had consistently stoked the rage as well, with nonstop negative advertising and by questioning Obama's patriotism and trying...

...Granted, quality is sometimes an issue (though the pirated 24 disc was perfect.) A lot of the DVDs available are so-called "coat movies," the kind of low-rent pirating famously (and hilariously) depicted in an episode of Seinfeld in which Kramer agrees to smuggle a hand-held camera into a theater in order to illegally tape a movie. In a coat movie you can literally hear people coughing and half the time someone will stand up right in front of the camera. And sometimes language is an issue. I had to buy three copies of Casino Royale until...
