...Saudis apparently believe that a lower oil price will be good for them in the long run. If they're right, it surely means that a lower price would be bad for the U.S. When it comes to the price of oil, the interests of producers and consumers are diametrically opposed. Whatever pious rhetoric comes out of exercises like this absurd "summit," there is no way that a change in either direction can be good for everybody. It's a zero-sum game...
...already. Similarly, if speculators think the price of oil will go down, they will drive it down more quickly. So, actually, speculation can be seen as a good thing: it forces us to adjust to higher prices more quickly than otherwise, and it gives us the benefit of lower prices more quickly as well...
...currently chic for fancy novelists to slum it in the lower genres, the way Marie Antoinette used to dress up as a peasant and milk cows. Sebastian Faulks just wrote a James Bond novel; Michael Chabon's The Yiddish Policemen's Union was a noir mystery set in an alternate universe. Randy Barnett, a professor of legal theory at Georgetown University Law Center, notes that while Scalia's opinion "telegraphs...
...cringed on Thursday when California governor and Crist pal Arnold Schwarzenegger - during his keynote speech at Crist's eco-summit - himself called offshore drilling a phony fix to the oil-price crisis. But Crist argues that industry experts he's talked to posit that increasing U.S. crude output could lower gas prices "much more rapidly" than the decade or more often cited. What's more, Crist believes that "just the mere discussion of more domestic oil production" is making a difference. "Look at the effect it's already having," he says, "in the sense that Saudi Arabia is saying they...
