Frankie was pinched trying to organize the pea pickers of the Imperial Valley. Frankie was pinched for unlawful assembly in Los Angeles. He was in jail the night before Reggie bore him a baby, Timothy. His ostensible employment was that of an ice man. With that other, ever-loyal functionary, Willie Schneiderman,* he tried to organize the waterfront, and began to attract the attention of party headquarters in New York. He was charged with resisting arrest during a melee in Los Angeles' Plaza. Then during an unemployment demonstration he waved a placard reading, "Defend the Soviet Union...

Politicians, hangers-on and reporters crowded into the smoke-filled city clerk's office in Jersey City. They were all assembled for a little democratic ritual. The Cominform's long-range goal was common knowledge, even in Belgrade: dismemberment...
...Loyal at first only to his mother and his crippled brother (Arthur Kennedy), Midge gets his start in a fight-club preliminary. With a natural yen for money and bloodletting, he soon gets a professional manager (Paul Stewart) and starts dropping other middleweights like bulls in a stockyard. He also becomes adept at dropping his friends, usually with a kick in the teeth. In one way or another, he gets rid of his bride (whom he married at the point of a gun), his manager, a couple of girl friends, and even his brother...
