...country rocker, Linda sings a lot of sad songs. Now and then she tips her hat to mainstream rock 'n' roll- That'll Be the Day and a razzle-dazzle version of Heat Wave-but mostly Ronstadt has built her career singing about losers. Her new LP continues in the same vein. "Save me/ Free me/ From my heart this time," she implores in a voice edged with tears. The gentle reggae tune Rivers of Babylon blows a few of the clouds away, but nowhere does Ronstadt's lusty soprano soar free. Her song selection needs...

...offering the opportunity to an appalling number of untalented children to become millionaires simply by raising an electronically amplified ruckus. In the early '70s, jazz, with its capacity for self-renewal, began to use the best of rock. Trumpeter Miles Davis launched the era of jazz rock with an LP album, Bitches Brew, that combined his avant-garde jazz style with rock's electronic sounds and driving rhythms. Only now has Buchanan finally decided to pick up that ticket. His new LP on Atlantic, A Street Called Straight, is working its way onto the charts and has generally been hailed as the first album that captures the excitement Buchanan can generate in public performances...

Melba Moore's latest LP, "This is It" is anything but. The producer, disco king Van McCoy (the creator of last summer's hit, "The Hustle"), tries to prop up Moore's small voice with layers of insistent drumming, strings and background voices. The arrangements lie somewhere between the lushness of Marvin Gaye and the overkill-extravaganza of Barry White, but they are totally unsuited to Moore. She screams and whines a lot (probably to make herself heard), and the end result is unnecessarily strident, not soulful. She should return to the concept of "Peach Melba," released a few months...
