New voices are enriching the old melodic sound too. From Britain, Sade translated her Afro-exotic features and bossa-nova ballads into a boffo LP. Anita Baker poured the ache of jazz into pop and sold a couple million copies of Rapture. All over the dial, female singers are anchoring distinctive personalities to the sound of soul on silk. But none have hit the plangent chord struck by John and Cissy Houston's little girl...
Other unusual delights kept cropping up. "Any King's Shilling," a new ballad about his grandfather going to war, and "Sleep Of the Just" came across as powerful Richard Thompson-style folk tunes. His reworking of "Inch by Inch" from the personal low LP Goodbye Cruel World redeemed that song from its over-produced vinyl version. And his rendition of "Heathen Town," a b-side of the "Every Day I Write the Book" single was tremendous...
...only because of this haze of idolatry, the band's reunion LP The Ideal Copy is difficult to judge. Like "Snakedrill," the record is preciously avant-garde, relying on sequencers and synthesizers to provide the requisite experimental edge. This approach proves effective in several instances, most notably the single "Ahead." However, in the wake of their own myth, their own influence upon progressive music, Wire now sounds like just another aspiring art/synth band. Instead of the kings they once were, Wire now seem mere pretenders to the throne...
