Psychologist Timothy Leary, 45, is less successful when it comes to com- municating with cops. The high priest of hallucination, who is most often held accountable for popularizing the mind-bending drug LSD, was arrested in Texas in December and last month received the maximum sentence-30 years in jail and a $40,000 fine-for illegally transporting marijuana. Leary hastened, however, to praise the gains which have resulted from experiments with LSD and other hallucinogens. Ironically, the one source of LSD that could be shut off instantly was the strictly controlled and limited supply that the only legal manufacturer, Sandoz Pharmaceuticals, has been doling out to a small number of carefully investigated medical researchers. There have been no recent reports that any Sandoz LSD was getting into a black market, but fearing public reaction to the very fact that it was manufacturing the drug, Sandoz stopped all deliveries...
