Prestigious, 274-year-old Barclays Bank Ltd. (deposits: $5.96 billion) has long been No. 1 in British banking. But two weeks ago, it looked as if Barclays was about to lose the title. Westminster Bank, the country's fourth largest, agreed to merge with National Provincial, the fifth largest, into a combine with total deposits of $8.3 billion (TIME, Feb. 9). Last week Barclays bid to stay on top by arranging a get-together of its own-the biggest in the history of British banking...

Following the lead of its U.S. licenser, Avis Transport of Canada Ltd. still needles Hertz with its "We try harder" buttons. At the University of Georgia in Athens, the local branch of Atlanta's Citizens & Southern National Bank has been issuing credit cards, says Public Relations Officer Robert Clayton, "like they are going out of style." Still, some stores feel safer with nonstudents. J. L. Hudson Co. in Detroit, for example, extends credit to teen-agers only when they...

Heading the rush is the company that for 65 years has led the industry, International Nickel Co. of Canada Ltd. Inco produces 65% of the free world's nickel, gets two-thirds of its output from Canadian mines, principally, up to now, in the Sudburydistrict of Ontario. To supplement that, the company has been busily prospecting for nickel all around the world. It recently signed a partnership agreement with the French government to mine in New Caledonia, has been carrying on protracted negotiations for other finds in Guatemala, and is beating the brush for nickel in Africa, Australia...
