...appearance of the poisoned candy was the latest in a series of extortion attempts aimed at two of Japan's major confectioners, Morinaga & Co., Ltd., and Ezaki Glico Co., Ltd. Katsuhisa Ezaki, Ezaki Glico's president, was kidnaped last March at his home near Osaka. He escaped three days later from an abandoned warehouse. His captors remained at large and announced two months later that they had put poisoned Ezaki Glico products in the nation's supermarkets. No tainted sweets were found, but authorities cleared shelves of all Ezaki Glico candy. The company lost at least...
Clarendon Ltd., the American subsidiary of Swiss-based Marc Rich & Co. AG, pleaded guilty to generating at least $50 million in illegal oil profits during 1980 and 1981 and then dodging taxes on the money by transferring the earnings overseas. Last week's settlement will allow the two companies to resume operating in the U.S. But criminal charges of tax evasion, fraud and racketeering still stand against Rich and his partner, Pincus ("Pinky") Green. The two, both 50, fled from New York City to their headquarters in Zug, Switzerland, in September 1983, only a few weeks before federal investigators...

Amdahl audaciously planned to build a new supercomputer based on a revolutionary semiconductor chip that would be far faster than conventional ones. But, concedes Trilogy President Frederick White, "it was just too much to bite off." The company abandoned plans for both its superchip and its supercomputer earlier this...

Mulroney may be somewhat closer to Reagan on defense and economic issues, but Turner has good friends in Washington, most notably U.S. Secretary of State George Shultz, who was president of Bechtel Corp. when Turner was a director of Bechtel Canada Ltd. After Reagan's highly publicized squabbles with Trudeau, the prevailing feeling in the Administration seems to be that "whoever wins, we win." U.S. officials contend that despite disputes over trade barriers, U.S. investment in Canada and environmental issues such as acid rain, relations between the two neighbors have taken...
...latest method that purports to select the sex of offspring is the brainchild of Ronald Ericsson, founder of Gametrics Ltd. of Sausalito, Calif. Ericsson, who has a Ph.D. in reproductive physiology, is the coauthor, with University of California Obstetrician Robert Glass, of a 1982 book, Getting Pregnant in the 1980s. Gametrics' aggressively marketed method has stirred popular interest, but many scientists are skeptical. "This could be Landrum Shettles all over again," says Dr. Joe Leigh Simpson, a spokesman for the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology...
