...which portrays such comic explosiveness of temperament and such undercutting (and yet tolerance) of sentiment, it was an intellectual pleasure to see amateurs capture so many of the emotional innuendoes. The stylization of Joanne Koch Schmelzer, her movements, her voice, her expression, were something to behold. Harry Knopf, as Luca, an old man, weak and frail, was very fine (and was an example of Knopf's versatility for those of us who remember him in Can-Can). As for Howard Kramer, the Boor, one can only say he must be seen to be believed...

Given a table, tuning fork, piles of music and the Sestetto Italiano Luca Marenzio one has a delightful evening of Italian madrigals from the late sixteenth century. Add Sanders Theatre and last night's smallish but enthusiastic audience, and Adriano Banchieri's madrigal comedy La Barca di Venezia per Podova becomes the absurd and absorbing musical work it has been for three and a half centuries...

Following the probing harmonic and contrapuntal explorations of Gesualdo, the madrigals of Luca Merenzio sounded a bit parochial and stay-at-home. Yet his two villanellas for three voices offered a great and rarely heard texture: soprano, counter-tenor, and basso. (Counter-tenor Carlo Tosti's sense of humor was, incidentally, crucial for the success of several of the Banchieri and Marenzio madrigals...

Giuseppe De Luca: Golden Anniversary Concert (Asco). The great Italian baritone was 70 when he gave this farewell recital in Manhattan in 1947. Although De Luca claimed he sang with "the interest-never the principal," of his voice, it is apparent in the dry, papery quality of the upper registers, that some of the principal is gone. But the phrasing and intonation are as exact as ever, and the range of styles is impressive: Bottegari, Handel, Monteverdi, Mozart, Alfano...
