...going to take it anymore. After an entire shopping week's worth of market research searching for the best, most interesting, most useful or easiest courses to take, you now realize how wrong everyone was. That so-called "gut" required far more guts than you expected. That purportedly "lucid and inspiring" professor made you wish that you were less than lucid during class. Or maybe the entire experience would have been just dandy, had it not been for the Teaching Fellow from Hell. In short, you were duped. Wronged. Spurned. Maligned. Dropped into the dust heap of "Rank Group...

...eminent chronicler of American history and ardent defender of the Constitution upon which the country was founded; in Amherst, Mass. For close to 70 years, Commager's essays, books and meditations probed the nation's politics and psyche. A teacher for 65 years, Commager wrote books that served as lucid primers for generations of students. Every phrase in this movement seemed fraught with some deeper meaning, as ponderous strings led the orchestra to a profound conclusion and a transition to "Sleepy Bones," the last and perhaps loveliest of the movements. The opening line of the novel, "Murders do not usually give their victims notice," is the perfect segway into a haunting exploration of Venetia Aldrige's character. The well-practiced virtuoso quality in A Certain Justice draws you into its foreboding atmosphere: "Has it ever occurred to you that a woman, when she is powerful, is more powerful than a man?" asks one of the suspects. The flowing prose often reaches its own stylistic climaxes, independent of plot events...

Keillor's charmingly lucid writing, however, cannot hide the gaping flaws of the plot and main characters in Wobegon Boy. Almost halfway through the novel, a magazine with a front-page picture and article appears one day, depicting John as a "portly Lutheran Lothario" who "tried to 'psychologically seduce'" women at the public radio station where he works. However, up to that point in the book, readers are lead to believe that John is kind, quiet, in love with his girlfriend Alida, and not coming close to stepping on anyone's toes along the way. This sudden, almost violent disclosure...
