Moriarity's old woman would have it that Juan is infertile; the traditional wisdom of the village gossips suggests that Yerma is infertile because she somehow doesn't really want or deserve a child; Yerma herself rages against the "fate" whichs eems to have condemned her. Combining the lucid with the ambiguoius, the symbolic with the earthy, the beautiful with the terrible, Lorca's vision is onw which deserves to be more widely performed and appreciated. Returning to the frenzied pop rock thread on the album, "Anchor" again explores the enigma Hanley deems lyricism. Opening with "the anchor is a kickstands/so you are going down with me/to the wrong side of the-quicksand," the band immerses the not-so-lucid message in flawless lollipop rock to create a confusing but lovable tune. "Anchor" is a musical advertisement for the lead singer--refreshing to match Hanley's slicker fashion sense and newly cropped bright red hair, and oblique enough to equal the message straining to come out from her internal vault...
Shorto's sympathies lie with the movement: a chapter on leftish clerics weaving revisionism into their preaching is far more lucid than one titled "The Case Against." Yet he is at heart a synthesizer. "The trick," he notes, involves doing "two things at once: digging into history with one hand while tolling the beads of story with the other." That he does not detail the mechanics of that prestidigitation can't be held against him. Whoever shows the way to achieving it will be one of the next age's heroes...
