Muir was a serious student of natural science, but his contemporary Mark Twain was a class comedian whose best subject was human nature. Twain tried his luck at mining in the little gold town of Angels Camp, a 2 1/2-hour drive east of Martinez; a replica of his one-room shack sits on top of Jackass Hill.
