Last week a woman, 57-year-old Ludmila Jankovcova, became Deputy Premier of Czechoslovakia. Brisk, businesslike Ludmila, a competent economics teacher, began political life as a Socialist and a disciple of Czechoslovakia's honored Masaryk-Benes liberalism. She won two medals for her anti-Nazi underground activity in the war, but lost her husband (the Germans shot him). She became a changed woman. When the Communists destroyed Czech democracy in 1948, Ludmila stood by without a quiver, and even helped the Communists to swallow up her own party. Czechoslovakia. To a conference of Consumer Cooperatives in Prague, Communist Party Secretary Josef Tesla announced "great deficiencies" in coal production. Food Minister Ludmila Jankoucova broadcast an appeal for wheelbarrows and carts to ease a "transport crisis" on the Czech railroads. Both seemed anxious to lay the blame on Slansky & Co., who were even then headed for the gallows. As if in explanation, Radio Prague played recordings from the trial testimony of Ludvik Frejka, who was author of the Czechoslovakian two-and five-year plans...

After arresting former Foreign Minister Vladimir Clementis on charges of espionage and conspiracy against the regime, the Communist police arrested his wife Ludmila. Hundreds of other people, accused of being accomplices of Clementis, were also reported in jail, including ten members of the Central Committee of the Czechoslovak Communist Party, four Communist district secretaries and a former ambassador.
