...House Commerce Committee passed a Republican proposal that drastically revamps Medicaid, the health-care program for the poor, following the general G.O.P. prescription for welfare: no more federally guaranteed benefits; instead, lump-sum grants to the states to spend as they see fit. Senate Republicans unveiled a similar plan. But the G.O.P.'s decision to hold short and swift hearings on the $182 billion cost-savings plan--as well as on the even more controversial G.O.P. Apparently, your columnist views black opinion as nearly monolithic and thinks that because Thomas is black, he must represent the views of liberal civil rights organizations. It is demeaning and condescending to try to lump the diverse members of an entire community into one orthodoxy and deem only one view authentic. No one would suggest that Justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Stephen Breyer must reflect "Jewish views," or that Justices Sandra Day O'Connor and Anthony Kennedy must represent "Irish opinions." Moreover, the Supreme Court is not a representative body; its members are appointed for life so that they...

Gee. Don't know where the movie makers got that one from. No antiabortion group these days would ever lump contraception and abortion together. Never. ...chance to act as God's hands. Absent from that list: a pair of $585 leather-handled rose shears from Hermes; a $1,995 vip Robotic Solar Mower that cuts the lawn while you watch from a $595 replica of the benches at Giverny; and a Poopet, a lump of cow manure sculpted by the Pennsylvania Amish into "functional fecal friends" that will "nurture and decorate your garden for years to come." These are available in many shapes, including rabbits, skunks and an amphibian, which they call a "large stool toad." Price: as much as $13 per Poopet...

...largertoday when a New Orleans court ruled that a girl who was conceived after her father's death via his stored frozen sperm is entitled to the father's Social Security benefits. The lawyer for the family said the decision, which may be appealed, could mean a $9,000 lump-sum payment and about $700 per month to the girl after that. Judge Elving Torres ruled that despite being born nearly a year after her father died, the girl is clearly her father's child and entitled to all benefits...
