...Iran, similarly, the Khomeini revolution continued to lurch along unpredictable paths, with the U.S. acting largely as a bystander. Leftist gunmen kidnaped and then freed a wounded U.S. Marine embassy guard. American civilians continued their airborne exodus. Sure of its case, the U.S. did respond more firmly than it had earlier to the killing of U.S. Ambassador to Afghanistan Adolph Dubs. It slashed aid to Afghanistan from $15 million to $3 million, sparing only humanitarian projects, and it angrily rejected Moscow's claim that Soviet advisers were not involved in the killing. But here, too, Carter conveyed an impression...
...still. As Roger Lewin, an editor of Britain's New Scientist, reveals in Darwin's Forgotten World (Reed; $19.95), the clock is still stopped. Iguanas and other lizards, close relatives of the dinosaurs that have been extinct for millenniums, prowl the islands. Giant tortoises, resembling prehistoric tanks, lurch slowly along their beaches. Lewin, aided by Photographer Sally Anne Thompson, does his usual excellent job of showing what Darwin saw when he landed in this natural laboratory of evolution. And not a moment too soon. The Ecuadorian government, which owns these islands, is fortunately taking steps to discourage tourism...
...Cant terms and phrases blemish the work, including, foremost, "nurture" in all possible tenses and manifestations. "Parent" is used repeatedly as a transitive verb, a questionable usage more startling than necessary. Quotations, essential to carrying the book outside the limited experience of ten women, sometimes obtrude, making the prose lurch like some balky pack-animal. And the eighth chapter, a pseudo-Marxist critique of American society, seems incongruous and overextends the credibility of the authors...
...plays are better read than seen. The devices he used to break fresh ground in the '30s are old hat now; even if his themes of the injustice of American society and the innocence of Sacco and Vanzetti are true, they are buried in the inevitable and agonizingly slow lurch towards a mawkish, yet depressing conclusion. Anderson's plays are strongly reminiscent of another expression of his times-Socialist Realism art. Like that famed WPA stuff, Winterset incorporates bold, tradition-smashing design with a sense of social justice; and like a Socialist Realism mural in a post office, it looks...
...first it seemed like a sad, familiar story-in-law problems and a bride-to-be left in the lurch. Christine Cox, 24, a librarian's assistant, a maid of honor and the best man were waiting in her apartment near Boston to attend the wedding rehearsal. When the bridegroom, Kenneth Levitt, 25, failed to show, Christine phoned his parents' home and was told, "Ken just left." But hours later, with the wayward groom still missing, Christine says, Ken's parents told her that their son had gone off to consider whether he should back...
