...election campaign has been dirty, and the streets of Asuncion are plastered with lurid propaganda. One poster depicts the Colorados as a plague of mosquitoes that need eradicating, while another portrays Lugo as the Antichrist with devil's horns and a pitchfork. Lugo's campaign has accused the Colorados of tampering with ballots - and campaign manager Lopez says he fully expects Lugo to lose "between 70,000 and 100,000 votes" to fraud. Newspapers, for example, have published the names of long-dead Paraguayans who are still registered to vote, and international observers have warned of a "tense electoral climate...
...easy to understand the community's frustration. With the exception of several tabloids aimed at the working class, the British media largely ignored the Matthews story until some of its more lurid revelations emerged. That lackadaisical approach contrasted with the rolling coverage given to the high-profile abduction last year of 3-year-old Madeleine McCann, the doe-eyed daughter of a prim pair of young professionals. But Kilpatrick seems to be taking his cues more from Senators Larry Craig and David Vitter than from New York governor Eliot Spitzer: he isn't going down without a big fight. Already, the Wayne County, Mich., prosecutor has suggested that Detroit city lawyers are rebuffing her efforts to obtain key evidence...
Today's artists are fascinated by popular culture, and want their art to compete with the mass media in its impact and pizazz. So they produce objects that tend to be lurid. It is as if the whole endeavor of art cannot be taken seriously unless the artists lead celebrity lifestyles, and unless their output has the packaging and sheen of Hollywood movies or expensive cars. Duchamp's circle lived for outrageous gestures, yet there was no sense of an already streamlined system for them to operate within professionally, as there is today. Or, where there was, they instinctively undermined...
