Best (Study Break) Picture: Face/Off. Clocking in at close to two-and-a-half hours, Face/Off is John Woo's pulp epic with one of the most devious action plots ever. Woo breaks out the book of Coppola for the artistry behind his intricate family entanglements, lush cinematography and immaculately choreographed violence. So he doesn't have Coppola's storytelling skill; who needs a story when you can have Travolta and Cage...
...your review! This year's thickly lush crop (see the greenery! TOUCH IT!) of art-brand-name directors (Scorsese, Allen, et al) promises to distract you with sometimes sub-par, sometimes legit current works. But what of their pasts? Oh, and electricity seems to have hung on, too. Wind and water power feed walled settlements where the remnants of humanity live like 19th century pioneers...
Posters for the production advertise it as "a new vision," one which will shock those familiar with the play's often lush productions. Foley's Antony and Cleopatra's is set in the Victorian Age, and Cleopatra's Egypt is a drab bedroom furnished only with a frumpy wooden four-poster bed. Instead of flowing and exotic garments, Cleopatra and her two dowdy maidservants wear corsets and stiff, dull-colored Victorian dresses with high collars...
