From the wistful ballad Fields of Gold to the insouciant rocker She's Too Good for Me, the lyrics wring pathos and irony from the misfortunes of unlucky lovers. Yet Sting's manners are too refined to let the suffering spoil the lush settings; the shackles in this emotional dungeon are lined with velvet. In Seven Days, pizzicato strings thrum a decorous, mocking waltz as a man muses over various ways to deal with a romantic rival. In the darkly cynical Love Is Stronger than Justice, a man kills his brothers to avoid sharing the affections of a beautiful senorita...
Andrew Lloyd Webber created a phenomenal hit. The composer's lush, legerdemainic Phantom of the Opera has played to SRO houses since it opened in London (October 1986) and on Broadway (January 1988), with Michael Crawford as the Phantom and Sarah Brightman as his beloved Christine. The Los Angeles company will conclude a record-breaking four-year run this summer...
...horse images were embedded in a lush, forceful and nuanced paint surface that -- as in Cabin Fever, 1976 -- could be very handsome indeed. The opposites didn't amalgamate well. As Rothenberg herself put it, "My formalist side was denying my content side." And so "I began tearing it ((the horse)) apart...
...estate of one John Campbell Dowie, charged with smuggling hashish. As it happens, Dowie's 22 acres on the island of Hawaii were the childhood home of the legendary King Kamehameha I, who unified the islands in 1795. Traversed by the lazy beauty of the Halawa Stream, the lush property boasts important archaeological sites and major tourism possibilities. In a ceremony last week, Customs turned it all over to the state. Dowie, on the lam since 1990, did not attend...
...McLane's set design does much to make up for the heavy-handed direction and the flimsy acting. The play is set in a house which pretends to be a ship--a ship waiting to run itself aground because no one is willing or able to navigate it. The lush blue lighting falls on a mast with a furled sail, a writing desk bearing a huge ship's wheel and a coil of rope...
