...results are spectacular. The structure, built on a slope, is dominated by a soaring Amazonian rain forest, lush with 300 species of plants. At its periphery, tree ferns and bromeliads flank a stream that leads to a mountainside flood-plain forest and an open vista of tropical savanna. There, plants from Africa, Australia and South America bask in a less humid atmosphere, where bees and hummingbirds help pollinate plants and a colony of termites aids in the decomposition of dying material...
...later, more overtly political works. This, taken with the film's use of Hollywood cliches and Lee's self proclaimed radicalism, is what gives Mo' Better Blues the self-indugent hypocritical air I spoke of eariler. Yet despite the uneveness of the script, solid performances (especially Washington's), lush visuals, a sensuous music score and Lee's subtle wit, easily elavate Mo' Better Blues into the class of strong, if not great, films. In 1979 five Communist Workers Party members taking part in a "Death to the Klan" rally were gunned down in the street by American Nazis and members of the Ku Klux Klan...
Signs of separation persist in the city's neighborhoods, nightclubs, gazes and words. A perspiring black man, nattily dressed in suspenders, white shirt and a hat, pushes a mower across a lush lawn just yards from the elite, whites-only Greensboro Country Club. Downtown, as professionals head home at night from glistening glass office buildings, an army of blacks -- so-called invisible people -- arrives to empty the trash and vacuum the floors. One leading white liberal lapses, unconsciously perhaps, into talk about "coloreds" and "black boys...
