...life, presence and a wardrobe of elegant costumes. She can also sing--not as stunningly, perhaps, as one might wish, but well enough to convey the poignant irony of the show's finest song, "Send in the Clowns." In her case, a stronger directorial hand would surely have added luster to an already adequate performance...
...there a limit to the housing spiral? President Carter's energy conservation program, announced last week, will certainly take at least some of the luster off the great American Dream of a home in the suburbs. Gasoline prices -and thus commuting costs for many suburbanites-seem destined to rise sharply over the next several years, along with home heating costs. Some home builders in temperate and colder climates are now including wall and ceiling insulation, but much of the country's existing housing stock lacks proper protection. That may make it difficult for newhouse buyers...
Soloist Melnyk, winner of this year's HRO concerto competition, teamed with the orchestra in a fine performance of Gershwin's Piano Concerto in F. It cannot be exhausted in one show; but this week a delectable exhibition of 70 objects, all from Western collections, opens at Manhattan...
...Princeton, Manhattan's Union Theological Seminary and Connecticut's Hartford Seminary Foundation. More recently Berkeley's Graduate Theological Union and the Chicago Divinity School have been correcting the imbalance in the West, but there has been no collection below the Mason-Dixon line to match the luster of those in the Northeast. Now that has changed. Last week the final shipment of some 220,000 volumes-nearly 4% shelf miles of books-from Hartford's superb collection went South, bound for the library of Candler School of Theology, part of Emory University in Atlanta. Added...
