...curious omission in all three films is ... sex. Horror movies love to tantalize their (mostly male) viewers with images of lust, the better to punish it. It's a weirdly anti-life streak that runs through most vampire movies, where one dies, or becomes undead, with a single love bite; death those movies say, is a sexually transmitted disease. Even the non-supernatural horror films, from Psycho to Halloween to Hostel, tend to begin with young people having sex-play, then kill them off. Hostel, whose first 40 mins. are a-groan with luscious young women, eventually turns to more...

...little doubt but that one of the individuals whose fate was conjured on this charm—its 2nd person ‘you’—believed the inscription capable of directing the future (and especially the object of the owner’s lust).... Let me close with another runic charm, perhaps more appropriate to Halloween, this time one for protection: “[I] practice witchcraft against the spirit, against the walking [spirit], against the riding, against the running, against the sitting, against the sinking, against the travelling, against the flying. ...Cornwell shook up her wildly successful formula. Scarpetta no longer drove the narrative. The supporting cast were no longer filtered through the chief, but had voices of their own. And, most surprisingly, Cornwell offered the perspective of the criminals, whose disturbing fantasies are rife with lust, murder, and mutilation. The difference between the new and old styles is akin to the dissimilarities between “Law & Order,” which only follows the police and district attorneys, and the spin-off “Law & Order: Criminal Intent,” which incorporates the actions and motivations...

...Ultimately, this “vaulting ambition” has hurt too many dreams, shattered nations too many times. We need to understand that democracy can only survive if leaders think beyond their immediate power lust and avoid tricky semantics to stay in power. Countries cannot rewrite their past, and, therefore, wishing for “better luck next time” to cultural heritage or history is impossible. But America, and the world as a whole, must indeed pressure leaders like López Obrador to honor the institutions it took much blood to uphold...
