...novelties (COLUMBIA) . . . Speaking of boogie-woogie, COLUMBIA has just released an album of reissues. Offerings include the Harry James Trio (Albert Ammons, Harry James, Johnny Williams, Eddie Dougherty); Pete Johnson and Joe Turner on Roll 'Em Pete; and the two-sided Boogie-Woogie Prayer, featuring Johnson, Ammons, and Meade Lux Lewis. These records are vastly superior to the ones put out in the older Decca Album . . . Cootie Williams plays trumpet and sings on Benny Goodman's COLUMBIA recording of Let the Door Knob Hitoha. Cootie's vocal is fine, but just try and figure out the lyrics. Reverse is Perfidia...
...name of the picture at the Trans-Lux fool you; it's called Virgin Bride, and it means just that. If you go with the intention of seeing a first rate, slightly risque comedy you won't be disappointed. But if you leave the Square with your tongue hanging out and a white foam drooling from your lips, you'll probably tear the seats out of the theatre before you've sat through half of the show. If you want to know where Meade Lux Lewis got his style, listen to his old-time teacher Jimmy Yancey, on Yancey's Bugle Call and 35th and Dearborn (VICTOR). Jimmy plays in a nice easy-going style, with bass figures somewhat more elaborate than those of Meade Lux . . . Since I wrote about ASCAP-BMI I learned from...
...giving out on the old one-two-three-kick... Lionel Hampton's latest offering features an unusual combination: rhythm section with two guitars, Spanish (Douglas Daniels) and electric (Teddy Bunn). Coupling is Pigfoot Sonata and Just for Laffs and both guitars take all the honors (VICTOR)... Albert Ammons, Meade Lux Lewis, Mary Lou Williams, Joe Sullivan and Pete Johnson, are among the eight-beat pianists featured in DECCA's Boogie-Woogie Album. Best of the records is Ammons' Boogie-Woogie Stomp, with the fine trumpet of Guy Kelly, as well as Albert's own rolling bass... Benny Goodman...
