...University of California at Los Angeles has found signs of viral activity in human sarcomas, or cancers of connective tissue. Drs. Werner and Gertrude Henle of the University of Pennsylvania have studied an intruder known as the Epstein-Barr virus in cells from victims of Burkitt's lymphoma, a tumor of the lymph glands. They have also studied the virus in cells of patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma, a malignancy of the nose and throat. Joseph Melnick of Baylor College of Medicine has determined that antibodies formed by the body to combat the herpes Type 2 virus* which often causes...

BURKITT'S LYMPHOMA is a tumor originating in the lymph glands that may affect the jaw, eyes and other parts of the body; it is especially prevalent in African children. Awards were given to Dr. Denis Burkitt of Britain's Medical Research Council, who first identified the tumor, and Dr. Joseph Burchenal of Manhattan's Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, who recognized its potential as a target for chemotherapy. Another recipient was Dr. John Ziegler of NCI who has achieved disease-free survival for up to ten years in 67% of more than 150 patients treated...

...Coincidence. It was the distribution of Burkitt's lymphoma that first implicated a virus as its possible cause. Named for British-born Surgeon Denis P. ...Thomas M. Bell reported from a research center at Entebbe that he has isolated reovirus 3* from seven victims of Burkitt's tumor. This finding alone might well have been pure coincidence, but there was additional evidence: antibody against reovirus 3 has been found in 73% of lymphoma patients, and in only 12% of comparison subjects from the same districts. From Australia came further word: mosquitoes carrying the same type of virus have been found there...

...between Burkitt's tumor and leukemia." But he was careful to note the difference in the effects of treatment. "The results here are really fantastic," he said. "There is nothing like this anywhere in the world. Long survivals, including apparent cure, after drug treatment for Burkitt's lymphoma are running up to 20%, much higher than for our leukemias. I have the highest hopes that we can take home some useful hints for treating leukemia and other tumors...
