...yearned for what he called "a less fast track." With the huge budget deficit and an ambitious tax- reform proposal dominating the domestic agenda, he had decided that Treasury, while less of a pressure cooker, "is where the action will be." Regan, former president and chairman of Merrill Lynch, had long eyed Baker's job from his Treasury post and readily traded his prestigious title for a position of greater power. Contended one of Regan's Treasury Department aides: "He considers the Executive Branch to be like a corporation. Cabinet members are vice presidents, the President is the chairman...

...morning of Nov. 2, 1983, Francis Lynch, then chief of detectives of the Woonsocket, R.I., police department, got a strange call. "You may think I'm crazy," said an excited young woman, "but there is some guy dealing drugs, and I can hear it on my radio." Lynch was skeptical, but he sent two detectives to the woman's house...

Well, the '60s are prehistory now, and nothing ages as fast as futurism. So it seems anachronistic for David Lynch, the gifted eccentric whose only previous features were the $20,000 Eraserhead and the $5 million The Elephant Man, to spend some $50 million (not another one!) bringing Herbert's mammoth fantasia to the screen. ...host of Dune bugs might ask. Who decreed that fantasy films must be as simple and simple-minded as Porky's Goes to Arrakis? Nobody did; and one can admire the world Herbert and Lynch have created even as one feels like an illegal alien visiting it. At the very least, Dune provides a bizarre bestiary of characters. One such, the Navigator, is a giant walrus-like creature that rules the universe while floating inside a liquid cage. The Harkonnens are the comic villains of the piece. These red-haired nasties with a taste for drinking human blood...

...grows impressively in the role; his features, soft and spoiled at the beginning, take on a he-manly glamour once he assumes his mission. Like most of the other cast members, MacLachlan delivers his speeches as incantations from an old, old testament. The actors seem hypnotized by the spell Lynch has woven around them-especially the lustrous Francesca Annis, as Paul's mother, who whispers her lines with the urgency of erotic revelation. In those moments when Annis is onscreen, Dune finds the emotional center that has eluded it in its parade of rococo decor and austere special effects...
