Into TCTC’s sonic hearth go Pink Floyd’s manic magnificence, Radiohead’s electronic imagination and Oasis’ lyrical sensibility. The album reaches full force at the moments where these elements combine most finely; “A.I.M.” (not related to our favorite electronic pastime) begins with a coarse industrial beat, develops with Yorke-like, dreamy lyrics and peaks with a driving, distortion-saturated chorus and sweet lyric hook. “Promises, Promises” expands from a straight-ahead power riff, introducing altered chords and electronic ambience...

...best documentary short subject. It was the third consecutive year a Geisel war movie had received an Oscar nomination, and never with credit to him. By now the Geisels had moved to La Jolla, near San Diego, and Ted was still itching to make a real movie. (With his lyric gift and Manhattan prominence, I can't figure why he hadn't worked on a Broadway show in the '30s.) He got his chance when producer Stanley Kramer, then the serious young producer of note ("Champion," "The Men," "Death of a Salesman," "High Noon"), signed him to write the script...

Even on an average song--and there are a few here--Jones' vocals...

...patchy double-disc breakthrough Southern Rock Opera, as the band better weaves their shotgun triple-guitar formula and continue to deliver their moonshine-soaked tales with equal bouts of irony and reverence. With no less than three capable songwriters at their disposal, the songs occasionally sound better off the lyric sheet than through speakers. But when the band get their pedal steel and acoustic drawls all in a row, they forge some gin-u-ine heartbreakers...

...roulette tables, and then console yourself in one of Star City's six bars?the Glo lounge, overlooking the gaming floor, is for those who like their drinks with a dash of retro camp. Seven restaurants on-site mean you won't go hungry, while the complex's Lyric Theatre is the setting for bombastic, Vegas-style shows by the score (catch veteran crooner Engelbert Humperdinck in mid-December). Bread and circuses indeed...
