...Tommy is a fairy tale, its outer narrative based on spells and enchantments, ordeals and rescues, its inner narrative an evocation of growing up and facing down the everyday demons of adult life. Unlike the bizarre Ken Russell film, the narrative reshaped for La Jolla by McAnuff and composer- lyricist Pete Townshend has an essential innocence, maybe even an excess of optimism. The title character, apparently deaf and blind from boyhood, is in fact rendered autistic by seeing his father shoot his mother's lover -- an infidelity made less sordid by the fact that the father, a World...
Composer Alan Menken won four Oscars for the movies The Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast with lyricist Howard Ashman. For the stage, they created Little Shop of Horrors. After Ashman died of AIDS in 1991, Menken tried various collaborators. WEIRD ROMANCE, which opened off-Broadway last week, shows how much he misses Ashman's storytelling. The two one-acts (book by Alan Brennert and lyrics by David Spencer) blend zippy tunes with cliche science fiction. A witty, upbeat song recalls how a boy fell in love with lab testing, and Ellen Greene sings gorgeous ballads. But what...
Guys and Dolls offers a nonpareil text and score, and a creative team so impressive that before the first preview, a year-long national tour starting in September had already been booked around the U.S. But the $5.5 million staging of composer-lyricist Frank Loesser's comic gem will be hard pressed to equal the emotional impact of his Most Happy Fella, telling of an inept but earnest quest for love by a hulking, homely immigrant farmer in California's Napa Valley. The book, also by Loesser, is intermittently burdened with the same irritating cuteness and insincerity that lumbers Crazy...
...Cranes do not list the lyrics to their new album Wings of Joy. Perhaps lyricist Alison Shaw does not wish to make her personal thoughts known to the listener, which would also explain the virtual incomprehensibility of her soft, high vocals. Or maybe she really isn't saying anything after...
...music is black America's TV station," says Chuck D, the group's lead voice, chief lyricist and moving force. It's a solid metaphor. Rap is cool music in a cool medium, carrying a blisteringly hot message of social outrage, as instantly accessible as the nightly news. It is also, frequently, as perishable: contemporary music that not only describes and comments on its time but passes with it. Rap is music for the emphatic now, rhythm without a past or future. In rap there is only the present, and the present is tense indeed...
