...drug, Kutrol,* launched last week by Parke, Davis & Co. (the M-G-M of Pharmaceuticals) as a cure for peptic (stomach) ulcers, has passed through all these stages. It was developed by Dr. David J. Sandweiss of Harper Hospital, Detroit, who had noted that pregnancy, for some unknown reason, gives almost certain relief to women with peptic ulcers (TIME, Aug. 15, 1949). Since 80% of all ulcer sufferers are men, who cannot benefit from pregnancy, Dr. Sandweiss prepared an extract of the urine of pregnant mares. ...hold stock in only one of the companies. To increase competition in certain cities, Warner also agreed that the new theater company would sell from 54 to 81 of the houses in its chain of 436 theaters. Designer Rolf Gerard was recruited to repeat his earlier scenic success with Don Carlo; pint-sized Conductor Eugene Ormandy was borrowed from the Philadelphia Orchestra. The only thing not touched: Strauss's score, which, says Kanin, was "protected like a delicate child...
Most of Kim's backgrounds (and some of its action) were filmed in India, and M-G-M technicians have done an expert job of blending the studio scenes into the location footage. While the screen overflows with exotic local color, the soundtrack matches its extravagance with Kipling's quaint version of the Indian idiom. Even grownups who are dragged off to see Kim are likely to have no regrets...
