More than a play about marriage, however, The Marriage of Bette and Boo is a play about parents and, more specifically, about in-laws. The differences between Bette and Boo's parents and their very different senses of familial responsibility provide Durang with endless amounts of comic fuel. Karen MacDonald (playing Margaret Brennan, Bette's mother) stomps across the stage as a wildly exaggerated version of an over-domineering mother in complete denial that anything is wrong with her family; Thomas Derrah mumbles his way convincingly through Margaret's stroke-victim husband Paul's virtually incomprehensible speeches. In contrast...
Whether Willey's allegations ever rise to the level of impeachable crimes is far from certain. But the three people whose statements Starr sought to keep confidential may figure in the process of getting there. Two of them--Dan Gecker, Willey's lawyer, and Marlene MacDonald, a Willey friend and co-worker in the White House--were in a position to corroborate her story. They were interviewed by the FBI. The third, major Democratic fund raiser Nathan Landow, is apparently being looked to for other answers. Investigators want to know if Landow, who knew Willey socially, tried...
...with mostly excellent arrangements which may leave his fans with a sense of deja vu: the twin flugelhorns, the wispy strings, the fuzzy horns, the retro female background singers. Only when Bacharach stretches his orchestrations into more rock-oriented territory does the music suggest outtakes from the schmaltzy Michael MacDonald recordings from the mid-80s. Few of the songs, though, sound so maudlin, and the melodies themselves stay thoroughly grounded in reality; these pop songs may be old-fashioned, but they sound far from melodramatic or artificial. Heartbreak itself, after all, is awfully old-fashioned, but it always feels fresh...
...shame that Tara MacDonald, though a student at the Harvard School of Education, doesn't want to go into teaching. After all, even Detroit's legendary headmaster Joe Clark never won a round from Dallas, the American Gladiator. As the 6 foot, 150 1b, U.S. National Champion in the Chinese martial art Sanshou, Tara would be particularly suited to keeping even the most rowdy students in line...
Campolo told TIME that he thought their counsel would be kept confidential and he would have "preferred" it that way; MacDonald said the same through a spokesman. But that did not stop MacDonald from announcing his expanded role in his Sunday sermon and Campolo from posting a statement on the Internet after a reporter called with questions. Nor did it deter the White House from confirming the information, although communications director Ann Lewis insists "my direction was that the pastoral counseling was private and personal and that we were not to release information." Wogaman gave only a short statement extolling...
