...film is set in eighteenth century Scotland, a time, a rolling script informs us, of great hardship for the Scots. In an age of corruption and despair, Robert Roy MacGregor (Liam Neeson) upholds the ancient clannish honor. Supported by his bonny red-haired wife Mary (Jessica Lange) and a host of loyal MacGregors, Rob Roy matches wits and brawn with the dastardly Archibald Cunningham (Tim Roth), bewigged defiler (and then some) of the MacGregor name...

...MacGregor, like the ambitious Scotsman he is, gets the ball rolling when he determines to borrow one thousand pounds from the Marquis of Montrose (John Hurt). The wheres and whyfores are slightly complicated (manifestly humanitarian, of course), but the upshot of the deal is that word of the thousand pounds reaches the ears of the money-hungry English fop, Archibald Cunningham. In between twirling his lace cuffs and showing off his swordsmanship, Cunningham contrives to commit cool murder and expert theft, and the plot is off and running...

...about in Rob Roy; it's a muddy, bloody slog through 18th century agrarian politics. Lange was attracted to Alan Sharp's script ("an amazingly beautiful piece of writing"), which contains some sonorous orations and choice epithets. Lange brings that signal gift, sexual intelligence, to the role of Mary MacGregor; the light in her eyes catches fire when she stares at Neeson. But Mary is not part of the film's main conflict, between Neeson and villain Tim Roth. Despite Lange's efforts, Mary is a mature version of that macho-movie ornament, the Girl--victim, inspiration, trophy...

WHEN HUMAN-RIGHTS CHAMPION JORGE CARPIZO MacGregor took over as Mexico's Attorney General early this year, he vowed to crack down on drug traffickers and the corrupt government officials who collaborate with them. Few citizens expected much action. But Mexican police have already killed two drug lords, Rafael Aguilar Guajardo and Emilio Quintero Payan, the alleged leader of the Guadalajara cartel. Carpizo's agents have captured more than 15 tons of cocaine, one-third more than in all of 1992. In one bust, police found 7.2 tons of cocaine hidden in 8,000 cans of jalapeno peppers...

British Transport Secretary John MacGregor called the prevalence of substandard vessels an "international disgrace" -- a statement corroborated, oddly enough, by the oil industry. A report by Shell Petroleum indicated that 20% of the world's oil fleet was suitable only for "the scrapyard." At the moment, the world's seaways are becoming scrap-yards. Even as politicians debated what to do, the Maersk Navigator, a Danish supertanker that collided with a ship near Sumatra two weeks ago, was still burning -- and still spewing...
