Center of attraction at Britain's Farnborough air show last week was none of the fast new aircraft roaring overhead but an 11-ft. groundling: the first publicly displayed model of the 100-passenger, Mach 2.2 Super Caravelle that British Aircraft Corp. and France's Sud Aviation propose to build jointly. Though design of the delta-wing plane is completed and current plans call for flight tests in 1966, final approval of the project is yet to come from the British and French governments...
...Algerian policy. It will not be smooth going at Sud Aviation either for Puget, a quiet, amiable St.-Cyr graduate. Though Sud Aviation made $8,300,000 last year, it has yet to recoup the original development costs of the Caravelle, and faces even greater outlays on the Mach 2 Super Caravelle, which it plans to turn out in cooperation with the British Aircraft Corp...
...force. De Gaulle has conducted four atomic test explosions in the Sahara wastes, is close to building a modest bomb small enough to be delivered by an airplane. At the big Dassault factories, work is under way on the Mirage IV bomber, a two-seat jet that can reach Mach 2.4 (1,590 m.p.h.) over a 2,000-mile range. Fifty of these, combined with the smaller, slower Mirage III, will make a considerable new foe for the Communists along about 1965. The first French-made A-bombs may well be installed in a few Mirage IVs next year...
Pilots of World War II fighters usually bailed out by climbing on the wing and just letting go. But in this day of Mach 2 jets, not even a quick-acting ejection seat can dependably shoot the pilot out of a disabled plane and get him down safely. The wind blast at high speed tears at a pilot's face, smashes cruelly at his chest, twists his limbs into grotesque positions. If he is not battered to death, he is likely to freeze or die from lack of oxygen on the way down...
...capsule has still to be tested above Mach 1, but the Air Force is hopeful that it will work even when a B58 is at its top speed of 2,000 m.p.h.-and when the air blast is almost as deadly as a stream of rifle bullets...
