...right. Virgin's reams of cheerful consumer research notwithstanding, Branson came in third on bbc radio's lighthearted year-end Villain of the Year poll. And in December an unauthorized biography by journalist Tom Bower-which seems to try the fancy trick of painting Branson as both a Machiavellian schemer and a reckless fool-ranked alongside Branson's own autobiography on the Sunday Times business best-seller list. (Branson has sued Bower for libel over a newspaper article...
...ascribed them by writers - and this Thursday we got a couple, like any good episode of "Melbourne Place." Week Three of "Survivor 2" started out Darwin and drifted tantalizingly into a John Hughes battle-of-the-generations kind of thing, and finally melted down into a good old-fashioned Machiavellian scramble, before turning Darwin again...
Luckily, however, these early jitters disappear as the play moves onward. Rayd Abu-Ayyash '01 gives the production's most outstanding performance as Creon, King of Thebes, whose Machiavellian exterior hides a more compassionate realism that cares more for the living than for the dead. (Best exit yet, by the way. Leaves with a "Jerk" impression, and then eschews CBS press tour...
...helpfully describes as "like having a booger in your mouth"). It's the gladiatorial concept: stranding 16 people on a tropical island to scrabble for food and shelter, all for the delectation of sluggards licking Cheetos dust off their fingers in their air-conditioned living rooms. It's the Machiavellian twist: having the contestants vote one another off the island until there is a single million-dollar winner and 15 rejects. It's the suffering, the mean-spiritedness, the humiliation...
