...Tuesday installment of Bloom County, Berke Breathed makes it clear that Steve Dalla's alter-ego "fairy" is not a symbol of homosexuality but is instead a sort of conscience that is trying to cure Steve of his sexist "macho" complex. Only Dallas (and, it would appear, the Crimson senior executive board) equates sensitivity with homosexuality, and the ignorance he displays both in making this mental association and in disapproving of both kinds of behavior is precisely what makes Monday's installment (the one which The Crimson censored) funny...
Berke Breathed must be similary confused because the humor of his February 28th strip was, if anything, less subtle than that of the Trudeau strip. Breathed's target was clearly Steve Dallas, a macho, sexist dog who is invariably shown in an unfavorable light, and not gay men. Frankly, I can't see how anyone could reasonably interpret the strip as you apparently...
...Crimson. But the senior editorial board, by cancelling the Bloom County comic strip, has moved me to come to the defense of truth and justice. The specific strip to which the board objected in no ay makes "an offensive joke about homesexuals." Instead, it makes fun of an excessively macho man who fears that he may be gay simply because he's tempted to watch "Masterpiece Theater" instead of a football game.
