Wertmuller is, of course, attempting to stage another attack on the male macho principle in this, her newest film The audience gets several tedious verbal and visual lectures on the beauty of female sexuality. Large sculptures of ancient fertility deities serve as a backdrop as Oscar's wife discusses the oppression of women through the ages. Most of the male characters are portrayed with the same comic flatness that marked and marred Steven Speilberg's The Color Purple. Men fight ridiculous fights, and say ridiculous things in bed, while they garner physical pleasures from Wertmuller's beautiful bisexual females...

When Oscar says "All women are whores," in his drunken stupor, Wertmuller would have the audience believe that this is the comic entirety of the male anthem. Actually, Wertmuller is in error. The complete macho male anthem is that all women are whores, lesbians, or frigid. By merely introducing lesbianism or bisexuality in the women characters, this pretentious film does nothing to change men's stereotypical views of female sexuality it merely confirms one aspect of a nasty but common world view. And hey, its all a matter of money anyway...

...rest assured that the Theatricals will not allow such a face off; they will be busy clinking glasses and pouring champagne toasts to Sly, whose agent says is more than proud to carry the Harvard banner. It is perhaps unfair to single out Stallone for his support of a macho foreign policy, while himself avoiding the draft. After all, most of the leading Reaganites of draft age, Richard Perle, George Will, Paul Trible, Pat Buchanan, New Gingrich, Paul Weyrich, among others managed to get out of military service during the war. This Rambo coalition, known as the "war wimps," have...

...what they saw on TV. They wanted to jump off ropes and hit people on the head. Once a kid got up on a chair, grabbed me, and pointed at me while he looked me in the eyes and says, 'Some day you're going to call me macho...
