Twin Peaks (ABC). Has it really been less than a year since FBI agent Cooper (Kyle MacLachlan) first heard the name Laura Palmer? After its stunning two-hour pilot episode, David Lynch's oddball soap opera wavered a bit, wafted into mysticism and dragged out its who-killed-Laura? mystery too long for some impatient viewers. ...comic has been filling arenas with his raunchy stand-up routines. Last September, after a four-letter appearance on the MTV Video Music Awards, he was banned from the channel for life. He was tapped as SNL's guest host, according to insiders, only after other candidates (including Kyle MacLachlan of Twin Peaks) were not available. The producers defend Clay's appearance, however, as being in SNL's tradition of adventurous comedy. Says producer James Downey: "We don't feel we're endorsing everything he's ever done by having him on this show...

Visitors to a bank vault find a stuffed deer head lying on the table. "It fell down," notes a bank officer blandly. The boyish FBI agent (Kyle MacLachlan) dictates every detail of his day into a cassette recorder and gets misty-eyed over Douglas firs and snowshoe rabbits. "Know why I'm whittling?" he says to the sheriff at one point. "Because that's what you do in a town where a yellow light still means slow down...

...Kyle MacLachlan is outstanding as Jeffrey. With his paperboy face and barely noticeable earring, he meets and hurdles each awful rite of passage with marked confidence. Laura Dern makes for terrific chemistry with MacLachlan; she slow dances and sips Heineken like a runner-up Homecoming Queen and proclaims with detached conviction, "It's a strange world." Isabella Rossellini is all lips and eyes as the tortured chanteuse. "Hit me, hit me," that S&M cliche, has resonance and poignancy in the context of her performance. Dennis Hopper is to-the-core nasty as the vile drug-killer; he was better...
