...take to mean that she was with Beelzebub. After that only Roger's opportune horseback arrival could possibly save her life. In spite of valiant effort by a harassed cast, the dialog is of the prithee and methinks kind and never gets the strophe of real human talk. MacMurray, heretofore a trade emblem of flip 20th-century youth, invents a kind of brogue which fails to transport him back two centuries and a half. Best shots: careful and authentic reproductions of colonial candle-dripping, house-raising parties, medical methods...
...seemed to have more logic some time ago when Miss Moore was a more important box-office draw. This version of the endeavor is a heavy-footed musical naively designed to combine the best features of jazz with those of the Viennese waltz. It concerns one Buzzy Bellew (Fred MacMurray), leader of a swing band which, reaching Vienna in a continental tour, ruins the business of the Franz & Elsa Strauss Waltz Palace. In the U. S. consulate, Elsa (Gladys Swarthout), who has gone there to complain about her rival's tactics, meets Buzzy, mistakes him for the consul. Their...
...sets out to curdle the blood in the grand old style. Free from this now-fangled nonsense about Indians' being human beings, at least four of the reels are devoted to shots of the atrocious savages' being shot down in fabulous quantities by plucky little bands of Rangers. Fred MacMurray is the unblenching avenger who fears nothing but a woman, so Jean Parker has to propose to him, Jack Oakle is the picaresque here who gets a bullet in the stomach, fighting the good fight. The man who put it there is that irredeemable villain Lloyd Nolan, but he gets...
Desperadoes Wahoo (Jack Oakie) and Jim (Fred MacMurray), separated from their leader Sam McGee (Lloyd Nolan) by a sheriff's posse, join the legendary Lone Star police force to facilitate their operations as cattle thieves. It has an opposite effect. After a brush with the redskins in which Wahoo is wounded and Jim emerges a hero, Ranger esprit de corps creeps into Wahoo, Jim begins to eye the Ranger boss's daughter. Thereafter both take their chores with increasing seriousness until the final test of their loyalty comes in the order to get their old friend...
...beautiful society femme and a despurt killer and a G-man and forced landings and lots of horror and comedy in rapid alternation. Yet in spite of its handicaps the movie built round the story comes very close to excellence because of the great acting of Fred MacMurray, our choice for All-American Role-Transcender. Fred gets rotten parts most of the time and the way he just thinks nothing of it and goes right ahead and does a grand job of acting is beyond comprehension. In this picture he is the aviator who defends the beautiful society blonde (Joan...
