...Flea in Her Ear is an island of ferocious madcap in the art nouveau Paris of 1900. It is farce in the glorious tradition of farce, a cauldron of mistaking: the proper insurance broker husband, Victor-Emmanuel (Steve Kaplan) has a double who spends a besotted life waiting on the proprietor of the infamous Pretty Pussy hotel. The cleft-palleted innocent, Camille (Howard Cutler) is a well-juiced womanizer. Even the wife of the hotel manager is not the frowzy pile of heavy flesh she seems, for there was a time when she was served up nude on a silver...
Blow-Up. An open Land Rover loaded to the head lamps with deliriously screaming people roars through London town. Painted and caparisoned in madcap masquerade, they leap down from their green go-devil and race through startled crowds like advance men for oncoming chaos. They crash into pedestrians, jostle a Guardsman on sentry duty, all but knock down a pair of passing nuns. Finally, they gang up on a baby-faced brat (David Hemmings) in a convertible Rolls, a mod bod with a pop mop who has plainly gained the whole world without losing his cool. He flips the revelers...
...Madcap Circuitry. James Seawright's spidery electronic sculptures could be Paul Klee's fidgety drawings turned into robots. New York's Modern Art and Whitney museums each snapped up one of the beasts from the tech stylist's first one-man show at the Stable Gallery. "For the artist to ignore the possibilities of technology would be utter folly," says Seawright, and he seems to have ignored few. His Watcher took 6½ months to produce; its tiny lights flicker in programmed sequences, photocell-tipped antennas bob about like tentacles, seeking the lights, and a speaker...
...Line. Hoving was one of Lindsay's first appointments when the new mayor took over the crisis-laden city and announced that he would make over New York into "Fun City." A mixture of madcap aristocrat, merry medievalist and serious scholar, Hoving gave up his job as curator at the Metropolitan Museum's Rockefeller-endowed Cloisters, even though it may have put him out of the line of succession for the post of director...
