...Junior Mike Madden--who is also a defensive back on the football team--is the incumbent closer, one of the reach-back-and-gun variety. But Madden has battled an elbow spur...
...John Madden, Shakespeare in Love, John Madden did a beautiful job directing Shakespeare in Love. The film has been put together with so much verve and confidence that it can veer crazily from slapstick comedy to touching romance without sacrificing a whit of stylistic consistency. I truly do not believe that it could have been directed better; however, the film was just not as technically and logistically demanding as the two WWII pictures. Though it may be unfair to compare apples and oranges, the Academy can and will--such is Madden's misfortune...
...movie. Despite criticalhyperbole setting the film up as a panculturalantiwar film a la All Quiet on the WesternFront, it is as hyperpatriotic as any JohnWayne picture of the 50s. He loved the way in which the lavishness of the players' dress contrasted with the shabby browns worn by the commoners in the audience. "At first we thought it looked bizarre," says Madden, "but what was so brilliant was how she captured in costume how extraordinarily...
...cheers. With barely 10 minutes onscreen, she makes her terrifyingly omniscient Elizabeth pivotal to the film, with players and viewers alike perched breathlessly on her every word. Dench attributes this potency not to her own skill but to the deference the film's other characters show her. John Madden, who directed her in both Mrs. Brown and Shakespeare, knows better. "She has this amazing accessibility," he says. "She could make Attila the Hun seem sympathetic...
