...fragment of metal that reportedly fell to earth in 1957 when a UFO exploded in the air above the state of Sao Paulo, Brazil, was sent to a Washington laboratory for analysis. It had been an article of faith among many saucer believers that the fragment consisted of magnesium more pure than any ever made by man. The lab tests, said the report, suggested an earthly origin; the fragment contained more impurities than commercially produced magnesium...

Endless Supply. Testing the substance, the NASA scientists discovered that it was either a porphyrin, a ring molecule or a closely related chemical structure. Significantly, the porphyrin ring molecule with a magnesium atom in the center is chlorophyll...

Once the porphyrins accumulated along with other basic life chemicals in the primitive oceans, the NASA scientists theorize, they interacted with magnesium ions in the ocean, leading eventually to the formation of chlorophyll. Before the appearance of chlorophyll, long-chain, carbon-based molecules could reproduce themselves only by using other of the limited building-block materials in the oceans. With chlorophyll available, some long-chain molecules were able, by photosynthesis, to produce their own life material out of plentiful water and carbon dioxide, thus availing themselves of an endless supply of building materials and ensuring that life would proliferate...

...forms the ocean floors and is found in such widely scattered locations as the Hudson River Palisades, the Brazilian Plateau, the Hawaiian Islands and India. Like its counterpart on earth, the lunar material consists largely of oxygen (58%) and silicon (18.5%). It also contains aluminum (6.5%), iron-nickel (5.5%), magnesium (3%), and smatterings of carbon...

...Gurney pooled their savings, founded a firm called All American Racers Inc., opened a factory in Santa Ana, Calif. Working with Britain's Weslake Development Co., they produced a brand-new, three-liter engine-a tiny 400-h.p. V12-and a chassis to match. Built largely of magnesium and titanium, the whole car weighed only 1,185 Ibs. The project, of course, was painfully expensive. In all, Gurney and Shelby built four Formula I American Eagles in Santa Ana, at an average cost of $50,000. To help cover the costs, they signed contracts with two commercial sponsors-Goodyear...
