...Green Magnet School, now signed on sub Pop, also graced T.T.'s with their presence. Their hard rock grooves and melodic vocals may bring them mass success given the current rage for various former labelmates. Regardless, they gave the audience 15 minutes of pleasure. On the down side of things, Meltdown featured absurd, pretentious vocals and silly heavy-metal lead guitar. And the Vancouver duo Mecca Normal's set was too long. Richmond wrote a book about his experience and eventually helped launch the first school based entirely on his Microsociety model. After much sniffing and sneering from the local newspaper, which dismissed the idea as "futuristic," "dubious" and "a gimmick," City Magnet School opened in 1981 in a empty library in Lowell, Massachusetts. By 1987 the school's students were testing two years above the national norm in both reading and math. ...Wetlaufer should have drawn more on her broad experiences in journalism to make Judgment Call a richer newspaper novel. The book would have profited from more to the flavor of a major metropolitan daily newsroom novel. Newspapers attract odd characters like a magnet, but Wetlaufer shares with us only a precious few stories that don't directly relate to the main plot. The reader wonders if there was other news in Miami during the time Sherry was reporting her story...
