Before I go any further, I must admit to a secret shame in my past--I almost joined the NRA when I was an impressionable youngster. I happened to be the Camp Mah-Kee-Nac riflery champion, and at the tender age of 12 all I knew about the NRA was that they supplied the cool patches that read "Marksman" and "Marksman First Class." I also knew that the riflery counselor, an ex-Marine named Leigh and a genuinely cool guy, was a member of the NRA. (Though even in my naivete I was a bit disturbed by his tendency...

...most interesting shot in the movie is of Chinese men spreading out mah-jong tiles. The tiles slide around the tables like a whirlpool suggesting the smooth, swirling plot the movie should have had. But we quickly return to our world of five mile-per-hour car chases and a fool chase involving Angie Everheart which, although almost anything is better with Angie Everheart than it would be without her, is awfully disappointing...

...voice, with its deep drawl and homespun poetry, sounds familiar. "Mah name's Lidia Simmons, an' Ah'm 12 yeahs ol'. An' these here're mah memoirs." Jeez Louise -- it's Forrest Gump as a girl! With scenes of slow-talking good guys in the U.S. South and dead buddies on Vietnam battlefields, The War might seem the first in a bunch of Gumpthings hoping to replicate that film's $285 million success story. But on a smaller scale, The War is a bigger movie and, for all its weepy trappings, a more adventurous one. It hints that it will...

Like the Amy Tan novel, Wayne Wang's film of The Joy Luck Club shuttles between imperial China and today's San Francisco. Four immigrant ladies, who meet for mah-jongg and call themselves the Joy Luck Club, have four American- born girls, now in their 30s. While the daughters follow the quiet ambition fed them at birth -- to be unostentatiously extraordinary -- the mothers fret and fuss. You're not a good enough pianist; you're too proud about your gift for playing chess. "I'd rather get rectal cancer" than have you marry that Caucasian. And look...

Some Japanese have lost everything: personal and business bankruptcies have soared. Shinichi Hoshino is afraid to reveal his real name. He has not declared bankruptcy, but that is a technicality. After running a bar and a mah-jongg parlor, he ventured into real estate in the early 1980s. By 1989 he employed 40 people, and that year he sold 100 apartments to customers who bought them as investments and tax shelters, netting $1.7 million in profits. In retrospect, he says, he should have realized that the boom was topping out, but "every month the prices continued...
