...conducive both to boredom and pretension, is the plight of a 36-year-old virgin (at least the ads say she's 36), played by Joanne Woodward. He works in a straight stream-of-consciousness style, using quick flashbacks intended to depict in reasonable measure the drift of his main character's mind. Sometimes these are a little irritating, but rarely more than that, and sometimes they're downright effective. Newman's use of camera is, in contrast to the fancy editing, routinely tasteful. The result is an intelligent and mildly absorbing movie of a sort not often seen nowadays...

Most Northerners find it hard to understand why school integration is so urgent a need in the South. Liberals might rosily dream of the day when all little children could grow up together to love and understand each other at integrated schools; and their main objection to segregated schools seems to be that the children aren't growing up to love and understand. Outer Dark is a morality tale that has elements of a Southern-Gothic horror story. Its main characters are involved in a quest. A newborn child, the product of an incestuous affair between a backwoods brother and sister, is abandoned by the brother and found by a passing tinker. The sister sets out on a long search for the child, and the brother obsessively pursues her, while both suffer physical and spiritual deprivations...
