Unfortunately, Piercy's novel fails to live up to its promising beginning. Her three main characters prove to be run-of-the-mill rather than unique. The married couple is Willie--a sculptor happy in his bigamous lifestyle, who refuses to wear anything fancier than jeans and a fishing sweater--and Susan, a fabric designer who lusts after the fashionable New York lifestyle of Tyrone, their wealthy neighbor across the pond...

...than negative. From the debris of the collisions, which involve particles traveling at nearly the speed of light, physicists hope to get information that will solidify -- or upset -- their understanding of the fundamental building blocks of matter and energy. Says Carlo Rubbia, CERN's director general: "This is the main road in basic science. You never know where the main road is really going to take you." Agrees Steven Weinberg of the University of Texas, a Nobel prizewinner in theoretical physics: "Maybe we will discover some weird particle for which there is no experimental evidence, and that would open...

...with a pantomime of catching and eating some insect. At best the show skitters along the surface of a script rich in unexplored depths. If A Midsummer Night's Dream is the most perfectly plotted comedy in the English language, Twelfth Night may be the most profound: its main subjects are death, madness, the delights of cruelty, the self-deluding and dreamlike quality of sexual attraction, the randomness of justice. Guskin's troupe makes the play merely sprightly, an ingratiating but seemingly minor work...

...enlists a little help from all the traditional Bond staples. As the main female lead, Carey Lowell provides a bit of excitement at first; she's a CIA informer for Felix whom Dalton picks up during his investigation. They narrowly escape death at their first meeting, and spend an amusing few minutes arguing over who saved whose life and who acted most professionally. Unfortunately, Lowell's role quickly degenerates to the point where she's half kept woman and half sidekick...
