...have grappled with the problem, all feel strongly that action can only come by federally-directed policy priorities and resource allocation. Low-income housing cannot be funded by cities overburdened by their share of the so-called "launch-pad" function--injecting the poor into the social and economic mainstream of society. Even federally-funded non-market housing is fiscally undesirable to cities because the residents do not contribute to the tax base needed by cities under the present tax structure. Although the federal government is the only instrument potentially strong enough to overcome this problem at the local level(this...
...Wounded Knee in 1890 that marked the end of their serious resistance to the white newcomers, have lived in relative peace amid the prevalent society. They are among the poorest of all national minorities, the most prone to illness, the least educated, the most resistant to assimilation into the mainstream of American life. They have been, as well, the least conspicuous and most docile of minorities-until recently. But in Oakland, California, in late summer, the right audience came. They wanted that beat. They got it and loved it and the band moved on to its big break, playing Hollywood's Palomar Ballroom in a series...
...Rise Club hosts the Universally Powered Roy Hannes Hip Ensemble this week. And this is the real stuff. Mainstream, contemporary...not to sound picky but you'd think there must be other labels. But Roy from Roxbury is a great drummer and has played with Charlie Parker. He's also performed at Sandy's and the Jazz Workshop but this is the first time in quite a while that he's played at the Rise. He's gathered some new musicians around him and is apparently all psyched-up to play...
