...much can be written about this defining moment in American politics, and so much has been, from the increasingly complacent mainstream media to the insurance industry’s frenzied advertising and lobbying against reform. But from the perspective of a young progressive and Obama campaigner, my advice to Obama is this: Don’t bend over backward compromising with people who want as little change as possible. Doing so will not only water down meaningful health-care reform, but it will also prove that there is no “meaningful” change in politics. The power...

Catherine Mayer's commendable article takes up the issue of the far right and how it is splitting societies in Europe [Aug. 10]. Unfortunately, by describing this development as "feeding off the economic crisis and the loss of trust in mainstream parties," she is missing the point. Phenomena such as xenophobia and fascism have historic roots and surface regularly with the help of opportunistic politicians. Unfortunately, the European media is as guilty as politicians - far-right or mainstream - for instigating and giving extensive coverage to racist parties under freedom of expression rules and with no regard for the protection...

Critics (and expats in town for brief, superficial sojourns) adopt a default posture of digit-pointing, waving jaded index fingers at a concert calendar crammed with Cantopop and mainstream international acts. But even the most cursory probing reveals plenty of homegrown edge. Consider the Underground, a fortnightly indie-music night that takes place in venues across town, whose organizers have showcased more than 300 bands in its five years of existence. That's irrefutable evidence that if you're looking to tap into live, original music...

...Couture is a pioneer of his sport, an MMA legend who helped take the sport mainstream. Before joining the UFC in the late '90s, he spent six years in the Army, and was an assistant wrestling coach at Oregon State University. Somehow, he seems to be getting better with age. Couture reclaimed a heavyweight championship after coming out of yearlong retirement in 2007, though he lost his last fight, in November, to current UFC heavyweight champ Brock Lesnar. He's broken an arm, his nose, and suffered an orbital fracture in previous fights, but swears he's pain-free...

Many German commentators saw the government announcement as little more than an political p.r. gimmick. Still, the liberal Süddeutsche Zeitung saw the announcement as a sign of how technology once considered a pipe dream has moved firmly into the mainstream of public debate. "Electric cars are no longer a topic for madmen but for the government. A million of these cars should be zipping along German roads by 2020. The government is instigating a revolution," the paper wrote last week. (Read "Electric Cars: China's Power Play...
