Markel and colleagues divided the cities' interventions into three major categories: school closure, cancellation of public gatherings, and isolation and quarantine. During the 24 weeks researchers studied, there were 115,340 excess deaths due to pneumonia and influenza in 43 states, with a collective population of about 23 million. New York City responded to its earliest sign of infection with isolation and quarantine over a sustained period of time, beginning 13 days after the first case was detected, and had the lowest pandemic-related death rate of any city on the East coast. By contrast, Pittsburgh reacted late, waiting...
...could be seen as good showmanship: give 'em something to talk about on the way out of the theater. Antonioni's films soon became famous for their endings. The last 7-1/2 mins. of Eclipse comprises a series of static, underpopulated street scenes in which none of the major characters appear. Blowup we'll get to in a moment, and Zabriskie Point ends with the shot of a house ... that blows up. The next-to-last scene of The Passenger is one continuous, wildly elaborate tracking shot that lasts for 7 mins...
...that most of her major novels have at least once been made into movies, you'd think they'd give Jane Austen some time off for good behavior. Call it, perhaps, a fantasy based...
Over 30 percent of residents said that they would not leave if government officials said they had to evacuate due to a major hurricane. In a similar survey conducted in 2006, only 23 percent of people said they would not evacuate. The study, which the HSPH developed in consultation with government and Red Cross officials, was designed to assess problems residents had during past hurricanes and attitudes towards upcoming emergencies...
...Known as “the thumb in the eye of Tibet” for its northward-bulging border, the kingdom of Upper Mustang once lay along the major salt trade route from Tibet to India. It is part of the Annapurna Conservation Area, a small piece of Nepal that borders China and Tibet. The king’s title is the rather grandiose and redundant "King Mustangi Raja" followed by his name, Jigmi Palbar Bista. Although he holds less power since the constitutional monarchy began in 1951 (the central government controls most matters), he still wields a fair amount...
