...piece of middle-class baggage, replaces Alison for a time in Jimmy's flat. Laurie Gould is an admirable bitch and an excellent actress, in fine control of her role. Ted Daniels, however, does no justice to the part of Colonel Redfern. He seems to be simply someone wearing make-up, and he speaks his lines with unnecessary sincerity. It is in the latter part of the play, when these people are introduced that the plot sags a little. We become confused about some matters of motivation and some consequences, and things move too quickly...
They have a refreshing aversion to the slogans of Soviet journalism, and enjoyed making fun of them. At one point a girl friend of one of the students, wearing high heels and a lot of make-up, came into the room. When I asked her what she did she said she she worked in a factory. But while her mechanical motions and speech are unsuitable at times, they do set up a few uproarious scenes. Whoever did her make-up on Wednesday night, however, should be dismissed immediately. It was ugly...
...depths of central Ohio the Oberlin College Gilbert and Sullivan Players are back for their eleventh season on Cape Cod, and weekenders in the general vicinity of the Highfield Theatre, Falmouth, Mass., would be well advised to check them out. As usual their make-up is inept, their chorus movement imprecise, and their fourth encores gratuitous. And, as usual, nobody cares. For under the guiding hand of Prof. W. Hayden Boyers the Oberlin group epitomizes all that which is fresh and lively in college theatre...
