Siobhan McKenna's Lady Macbeth is a most impressive and consistent performance. For her first entrance she makes a long, grand sweep, with lengthy red tresses flowing down her green gown. Before she has uttered a syllable, we know that this is a woman to be reckoned with, a woman of enormous inner strength. She is able to go on to make it clear that she does not covet the crown just for her own sake but wants her husband to be king at any costs because she is so much in love with him. ...steel industry actually has managed to eliminate featherbedding more than many industries, and management, when pressed for examples of make-work, can only complain that a ten-man hearth crew does the work of seven men, that in one plant five crews are employed to move steel where four could do the job. Featherbedding has helped to break whole firms: automakers now contend that it was a major factor behind the demise of Packard, Hudson and Kaiser cars. The United Auto Workers often insist that several types of skilled workers-machinists, oilers, carpenters, metal handlers-work on a single...

Canned goods, sometimes turned out by several different communes to make up a single order, varied widely in quality, were often bad. After eating a shipment of canned foods from their Chinese comrades, nearly 4,000 East Germans became ill, and some died...
Author Birmingham may be thanked for a series of small fictional favors. He can find a status symbol in a haystack ("French bread means somebody for dinner"). He makes nurses and vice presidents and suburbanites speak with tape-recorded fidelity and occupational rightness. And his multiple flashbacks rarely loom up like detour signs. Unfortunately, mannerisms do not make the man, and Novelist Birmingham's deft social observations lack the probing roots of Marquand's social experience...
