Phillips and Gurland solicited the films for the festival by putting advertisements in the magazines Film Threat and Film Maker, and they received over 200 submissions from independent film makers. The two chose about 50 films for the festival, 13 of which are feature-length films. Stocks rose sharply, as third-quarter earnings reports continued to come in above analysts' expectations.
