About 25,000 of the traumatized Chinese have descended on the sleepy West Borneo port of Pontianak, where they live in dismal squalor. The Chinese are crammed into makeshift quarters, bathe in muddy, sewage-filled canals and wander aimlessly along the waterfront, many of them without homes or hope. Pontianak's Communist propagandists could easily use these displaced Chinese as a breeding ground for more unrest and tension...

...Shut Up. For his own major skirmish in that war, in the East Room of the White House, Johnson broke completely with his usual press-conference choreography. Thanks to a lavalier microphone, he was able to leave the lectern and prowl back and forth on a makeshift stage-all the while chopping the air, clutching his breast, slapping, clenching and conjoining his big hands to pound home his points, toying with his glasses and abandoning his previous deadpan, Sunday-sermon visage for a range of grins and grimaces, smiles and scowls worthy of a Method actor. Minister, choir and organ perch atop the projection booth or a makeshift stage, and the sermon is piped into cars through window speakers. Among the most impressive of several new churches specially built for drive-in congregations are Schuller's Garden Grove Community Church (designed by Richard Neutra) and the glass-walled Trinity Reformed Church in Kent, Wash., which will accommodate up to 300 people in cars parked outside. Both Garden Grove and Trinity Reformed also serve worshipers seated in the nave...

...blinks: "Who knew what the world was coming to?" The women smoke cigarettes, the men falsify accounts. Fear of God is replaced by fear of bureaucrats. The old fixed values are suddenly gone. At the end, Calman stops the world and gets off. He hides himself in a private makeshift synagogue-a mirage of an island in the sea of change...
