...could hardly have happened to a thinner talent. One gets video tape after video tape of Nauman gravely smearing his body with black or green makeup; Nauman distending his mouth in froggy grimaces at the camera; Nauman Walking in an Exaggerated Manner Around the Perimeter of a Square; and an effort named Bouncing Balls, 1969, a long closeup of Nauman's unremarkable testicles jiggling up and down. It makes the most tedious of Warhol's movies seem like the chase scene in Bullitt. Every so often, Nauman inflects the monotony a little by putting the camera...
...cast is large and largely helpless. Finch, a professional to the quick, has the decency not to look embarrassed, even when singing knock-kneed Bacharach-David soliloquies with lines like "Have I found Shangri-La/ Or has Shangri-La found me?" Liv Ullmann, practically impacted in makeup, smiles bravely; and there is a peppy song-and-dance number, kind of a Donald O'Connor comic turn, by Bobby Van, who is most engaging as a show-biz ham. Sally Kellerman plays a neurotic Newsweek correspondent. Also on hand are John Gielgud, George Kennedy, Michael York, Olivia Hussey, James Shigeta...

There were too many theatrical asides aimed at the TV cameras and too many studied parallels to the Viet Nam War, including a "demilitarized zone" and "ceasefire observers." Finally there was the self-conscious symbolism of the choice of the site itself, the mass burial ground...
...orientation toward the future sets it apart from Synanon, the new organization is carrying on one old Synanon tradition: subjecting members to rituals of a kind that Sociologist Erving Goffman calls "degradation ceremonies." New male residents are required to shave their heads; women are compelled to go without makeup for as long as six months. All residents must take part in "the circus," Delancey Street's version of the Synanon "game." Under the leadership of a "ringmaster," members indulge in three-hour bouts of name-calling and mutual criticism. Admits Family Member George Lopez: "We put people together...
